Cubs' Scales to play in Japan

CHICAGO -- Bobby Scales was given an unconditional release by the Chicago Cubs from his Triple-A contract in order for the veteran infielder to sign with the Nippon Ham Fighters of Japan's Pacific League.

The Cubs will receive cash considerations from the Ham Fighters, who also signed former Cubs outfielder/first baseman Micah Hoffpauir before this season.

Scales, 33, had call-ups with the Cubs in 2009 and 2010. He is a .284 career hitter in 13 minor league seasons.
