Cubs claim RP De La Cruz from Brewers

MESA, Ariz. -- The Chicago Cubs claimed right-handed reliever Frankie De La Cruz off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, filling the final spot on the 40-man roster in the process.

He is expected to join big-league camp as early as Saturday and fight for one of the available bullpen spots.

De La Cruz struggled this spring with the Brewers, giving up seven earned runs in 3 1/3 innings, leaving him with an 18.90 ERA.

Over the last five years, De La Cruz has appeared in 26 big-league games with four different teams. He appeared in 11 games with the Brewers last season, posting a 2.77 ERA over 13 innings.

The 28-year old native of the Dominican Republic began pitching professionally in the Detroit Tigers organization in 2002. He has also pitched for the Florida Marlins and San Diego Padres.

He has as many as 17 saves at Single-A West Michigan in 2004 and posted nine saves at Triple-A Portland in 2009.
