The Chicago Fire transferred Uruguayan forward Gaston Puerari to Club Atlas, the team announced Wednesday.
"Club Atlas was very keen on Gaston, and we made the decision to accept the offer based on the best interest of building our club," Fire interim head coach and technical director Frank Klopas said in a statement. "This move provides us with additional flexibility to find a player who will help us achieve our goal of making the MLS Cup Playoffs."
While Puerari showcased an energetic demeanor in his first season with the Fire, the 25-year-old forward did not contribute much for the club in the scoring column. In 14 games, Puerari had one goal and two assists.
With the move, it frees up an international player spot on the Fire roster. Puerari's 2011 salary of $50,000 was one of the lowest on the Fire roster. The Fire did not disclose terms of the deal with Atlas.
