Gray twins commit to NIU

Senior twins Keith Gray and Kevin Gray of Brooks have committed to Northern Illinois, giving newly-named coach Mark Montgomery his first recruits.

Keith, a 6-foot-7 forward, averaged 11.4 points and 9.7 rebounds this season. Kevin, also a 6-7 forward, averaged 15.7 points and 11.0 rebounds.

“NIU has been recruiting them since they were sophomores,” Brooks coach Bobby Locke said. “[Montgomery] gives [Northern Illinois assistant] Todd Townsend all the credit. He’s been following them since they were sophomores, and he’s always thought highly of them.

“It’s a great fit for them. They wanted to go together. It’s not far from home, and they’ll get the opportunity to play right away.”

Both players have come a long way since they were raw and uncoordinated freshmen. As seniors, the Grays were among the top forwards in the Chicago Public League and were key to Brooks winning the city title and finishing in third place in Class 3A.

“They’re getting kids who are outstanding athletes, guys that have the potential to play face-up basketball, post-up basketball, great defenders,” Locke said. “Their best basketball is ahead of them. I think NIU is very lucky. I’m surprised more of the local schools didn’t have more interest in them. I think they’re going to regret that down the line.”

For Montgomery, the Grays’ commitments give him a strong start to his recruiting efforts in Chicago. Montgomery said when he was hired Chicago would be an emphasis for him.

Keith and Kevin Gray join Glenbard East (Ill.) point guard Zach Miller and Liberty Tech (Tenn.) shooting guard DeAndre Barnette in Northern Illinois’ 2011 recruiting class. Miller and Barnette signed when Ricardo Patton was still the Huskies’ coach.
