Rapid Reaction: White Sox 5, Royals 4

CHICAGO -- A quick look at the Chicago White Sox's 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday at U.S. Cellular Field.

How it happened: The White Sox had to battle their main nemesis, Bruce Chen, who had defeated the Sox five times in six decisions over the past two seasons. They got off to a good start when Dayan Viciedo hit his 20th home run of the season in the first inning. The Royals scored a run on a bang-bang play at home plate when Lorenzo Cain was called safe on a throw from Alex Rios to Tyler Flowers. Sox bench coach Mark Parent was ejected for arguing the play with home plate umpire Mark Carlson. The Sox pulled ahead again when Alexei Ramirez doubled home Gordon Beckham in the third. Flowers took Chen deep in the fourth with A.J. Pierzynski on base and Paul Konerko hit his 22nd homer in the sixth. The Royals scored three times late off the Sox bullpen, Alcides Escobar doubled in a run in the eighth and Brayan Pena and Johnny Giavotella each had RBI singles in the ninth off Addison Reed.

What it means: The Sox added a half-game to their lead in the American League Central (the Tigers play at Anaheim Sunday night) and snapped Kansas City’s winning streak in the season series at six games. The Royals still command the season series, having won 9 of 14 in 2012. Chris Sale got the win after previously losing two of his last three starts.

Outside the box: Gavin Floyd may rejoin the Sox rotation next week if his final rehab session is successful. Floyd will test his sore elbow Sunday by throwing curves for the first time since he was injured on Aug. 27. Kevin Youkilis missed his second straight game due to the birth of his son. The third baseman is expected to return Sunday or Monday. Adam Dunn has also missed two consecutive games after reinjuring his right oblique. Manager Robin Ventura said Dunn will miss at least one or two more games.

Up next: The Sox will send lefty Hector Santiago (3-1, 3.71 ERA) against the Royals’ Jeremy Guthrie (7-12, 5.34) in the rubber game of the series on Sunday.
