The White Sox are expected to recall left-hander Chris Sale for Wednesday’s game at Detroit.
The team’s first-round draft pick out of Florida Gulf Coast University has already advanced from Single-A Winston-Salem to Triple-A Charlotte. Projected to be a starter, Sale is working out of the bullpen at the start of his professional career to keep his innings down.
With left-hander Erick Threets on the disabled list, a move that opened a roster spot for Carlos Torres to start Game 2 of Tuesday’s day-night doubleheader at Detroit, the White Sox have an opening or a lefty reliever.
Torres is expected to be optioned back to Charlotte immediately after his start Tuesday. The Sale move probably won’t be announced until Wednesday, although it could be done after Tuesday’s game if the team is so inclined.
Sale had a 2.25 ERA in four innings (four outings) at Winston-Salem and has a 2.84 ERA in 6 1/3 innings (seven outings) at Charlotte.
The lean lefty is listed at 6-foot-5 and 170 pounds.
