Santiago takes a pass on WBC

CHICAGO -- Scratch Chicago White Sox pitcher Hector Santiago from Puerto Rico's provisional roster of the World Baseball Classic.

The left-hander told MLB.com this week that he has elected to not participate in the tournament and will remain in Glendale, Ariz., at White Sox camp for the duration of the spring.

Santiago will focus on earning a spot in the starting rotation if John Danks is not ready to start the season on time. Danks is on schedule in his recovery from shoulder surgery last summer, but there are no guarantees he will be available the first time through the rotation.

The expectation is that Danks will be ready to pitch at least by May 1, if he isn't ready by Opening Day. If Santiago earns an early rotation spot, he is then expected to head to the bullpen when Danks returns.

Four White Sox players remain on WBC provisional rosters, although none for Team USA. Pitcher Jesse Crain is on the Canada provisional roster, while Alex Rios is listed with Puerto Rico. Minor leaguers Andre Rienzo (Brazil) and infielder Andy Gonzalez (Puerto Rico) are also listed.
