White Sox to alter starting rotation

CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox will alter their pitching rotation during the upcoming road trip, moving Dylan Axelrod into the upcoming series at Washington against the Nationals.

The White Sox also announced that Jose Quintana will be moved to Friday’s series opener at Cleveland.

The matchup of Axelrod against the Nationals appealed to the White Sox’s coaching staff. Injury was not said to be a reason for the change.

“We started looking at the rest of the month and we just liked that a little bit better than them being the other way,” manager Robin Ventura said.

Quintana struggled in his 2013 debut Friday, giving up six runs (five earned) over four innings. The left-hander faced seven batters in the fifth inning but failed to retire any of them. Axelrod, on the other hand, was a bright spot on the opening homestand, giving up a single unearned run on three hits as the White Sox were able to overcome Mariners ace Felix Hernandez.

The pitching matchups at Washington are now Jake Peavy vs. Gio Gonzalez on Tuesday, Gavin Floyd vs. Jordan Zimmermann on Wednesday and Axelrod vs. Dan Haren on Thursday.
