Konerko returns from rehab assignment

CHICAGO -- Paul Konerko was spotted in the Chicago White Sox clubhouse Sunday morning, a clear sign that he will be activated for Monday’s series opener against the Detroit Tigers.

Konerko had three hits at Double-A Birmingham on Saturday night to officially close out his minor-league rehab assignment. He has been on the disabled list because of a lower back strain.

“Last night he was swinging it pretty good and got a few hits,” manager Robin Ventura said. “Health-wise he’s looking good. It’s just one of those that you want to wait until he gets back here and you see him in person and you get it that way. Any time you get Paulie back, it’s important for a lot of reasons.”

Konerko has split his time equally this season between starts at first base and starts as the designated hitter, but he figures to get more DH time down the stretch.

“He likes being on the field and you want to take care of him in a way and you know you’re taking care of his back,” Ventura said. “Him and Adam (Dunn) both like being on the field so you try and mix it up a bit.”
