White Sox close in on a DL decision

CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox are a day or two from deciding whether or not Gordon Beckham will go on the disabled list.

The second baseman, who has not played since Saturday, has been having trouble with a tendon in his left wrist. He had surgery for a broken bone in his left hand earlier this season, causing him to miss nearly two months.

Beckham injured himself Friday while swing a weighted bat before batting practice. He played both Friday and Saturday, but was out of the lineup on Sunday and hasn’t played in the current series against the Detroit Tigers.

Without Beckham, the White Sox are not only shorthanded on the infield, they lack a backup shortstop in the event Alexei Ramirez is injured. A former shortstop in college at Georgia, Beckham had also been serving as Ramirez’s emergency backup and has even played six innings there this year.

Until a decision is made on Beckham, the likely candidate for emergency shortstop is Jeff Keppinger.
