Sox OK with Garcia playing winter ball

CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox are prepared to let injured outfielder Avisail Garcia play in winter ball this year, even though the outfielder isn’t expected to play in a major league game before the end of this season.

“He’ll be ready to play in winter ball,” executive vice president Kenny Williams said Sunday.

While watching Jose Abreu during his simulated game Sunday, Williams lamented the fact that Abreu and Garcia only got to play nine games together this season.

Garcia was lost for the season to a shoulder injury during the second week. Abreu has been on the disabled list for the past two weeks with an ankle issue, but will return Monday.

Even though Garcia has expressed a desire to possibly play for the White Sox before the end of the season, Williams thinks that is too optimistic of a timetable. But Williams is confident that Garcia will be participating in baseball activity again before the end of the regular season.

After Garcia had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder the expectation was that he wouldn’t play again this year, but would be ready to completely participate in spring training next year.
