CLEVELAND – It couldn’t have been a better Opening Day scenario for rookie third baseman Brent Morel.
With his teammates swinging away like mad, Morel was able to fly under the radar, collecting two hits, including a double, and even driving in two runs in the 15-10 victoy over the Indians. In addition to that, he made some solid plays at third base, including a barehanded grab and throw that he made with ease.
“That’s the reason he’s here,” manager Ozzie Guillen said about Morel’s defense. “He made a couple of big plays for us today. We know this guy can play some defense. With the offense we provide, we are not looking for him to carry this ballclub. [That] he swung the bat the way he did, that’s a plus.”
If he can continue to produce in similar fashion, there is a Rookie of the Year Award that needs to be handed out at the end of the season.
Yeah, it’s only one of 162, but going back to last season when he was a September callup, Morel has proven to be unfazed. His two hits Friday gave him a seven-game hitting streak going back to 2010 so maybe he does have the offense to match his defense after all.
