First-period wrap: Hawks 0, Wild 0

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Chicago Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild are scoreless after one period at the Xcel Energy Center.

One night after giving up four goals in the opening period, the Hawks played much tighter defense, allowing only a couple of prime scoring chances in the first 20 minutes. The Wild’s best attempt came on a power play, but Marty Turco stopped Eric Nystrom from hammering one past him at the goal mouth.

Later, Jonathan Toews looked to have an open net for a wrap-around score, but NIklas Backstrom recovered at the last second to make the save. Troy Brouwer followed with a good chance but was also denied.

The Hawks had 11 shots in the period while the Wild had nine.
