First-period wrap: Flames 1, Hawks 0

CALGARY, Alberta -- The Chicago Blackhawks trailed the Calgary Flames 1-0 after the first period at the Saddledome on Monday.

The Hawks had a slow start to the game to say the least. They went 11:42 without a shot on net in the middle portion of the period, finishing with just three shots to the Flames’ 10.

Calgary got on the board after a faceoff win and then a rush where Lance Bouma found Mikael Backlund wide open in the middle of the ice moving towards the Hawks net. Backlund slipped it past Corey Crawford for the lone goal of the period. Bouma earned his first point of the season on the play.

The Hawks showed little offensive punch. One of their better scoring chances came on a nice shorthanded try by Jonathan Toews, late in the period.
