First-period wrap: Sharks 2, Hawks 1

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Blackhawks trailed the San Jose Sharks 2-1 after the first period at the United Center on Monday.

The Hawks were sloppy early, taking two penalties, and the Sharks cashed in on the ensuing 5-on-3 power play. Joe Pavelski scored his 14th goal of the season.

The Hawks tied the game when their fourth line, aided by their third defensive pairing, caught the Sharks scrambling. After Chris Campoli hit the post with a shot, the puck eventually made its way, in the air, to the right of goalie Antti Niemi. Viktor Stalberg was there to bat it into the goal for his 11th of the year.

The Sharks re-took the lead at the end of a Hawks power play, while they were changing players. Campoli and Troy Brouwer went after Patrick Marleau, who had the puck along the boards. It left the middle of the ice wide open for Joe Thornton, who got it by Corey Crawford.
