Every day between now and the end of the regular season I’ll update you on the playoff race as it relates to the Chicago Blackhawks.
Eighty-one games have been played and still nothing has been decided for the Chicago Blackhawks.
Their 4-2 win over Detroit on Friday put them on the brink of securing a playoff seed but it will take the final day of the regular season to determine if they get in.
Dallas beat Colorado 3-2 on Friday to stay within two points of the Hawks, so a Stars win in Minnesota on Sunday coupled with a Hawks regulation loss to the Wings would knock Chicago out of the postseason by virtue of a tiebreaker.
If the Hawks get at least a point in their 11:30 a.m. game Sunday, they are automatically in the playoffs as they will hold a three point edge on the Stars. Dallas plays at 5 p.m. in Minnesota.
If the Hawks lose in regulation, they’ll need a Stars loss in regulation or overtime to keep playing next week when the playoffs begin. After Friday’s action in the Western Conference seven of eight teams have clinched a playoff spot. The last one is up for grabs between Chicago and Dallas. The Hawks can also clinch if they lose but Dallas wins by virtue of a shootout.
The Hawks can still finish as high as the No. 5 seed in the conference.
