The Hawks came out energized, getting the game’s first goal 1:43 into the contest. Bryan Bickell had a highlight-reel score, getting around defenseman Kevin Bieksa and then skating goalie Roberto Luongo down and out. It was Bickell’s first goal of the series. Dave Bolland and Michael Frolik had assists.
Bolland took an elbowing penalty a few minutes later and the Canucks tied the game on the ensuing power play. Sami Salo scored from the point after the puck deflected off at least one Hawks player and then got past Corey Crawford.
Though he was in the penalty box for the goal, Bolland had a strong first period, showing little rust after missing the last 17 games due to a concussion.
The Hawks spent a little too much time in their own zone on two Canucks power plays but still outshot Vancouver, 13-7. Luongo made three big saves, including a beauty with his glove on a Jonathan Toews' shot.
