1st period wrap: Wings 2, Blackhawks 0

DETROIT -- The Chicago Blackhawks trail the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 after the first period in a preseason contest at Joe Louis Arena.

The Hawks made mistakes in their own end in the opening period, giving up a power play goal and then another tally late in the opening 20 minutes.

After Marcus Kruger was kicked out of the face-off circle during a Wings power play, Detroit quickly converted when Valtteri Filppula pounced on the puck and scored. Later, with just 47 seconds to play in the period, Henrik Zetterbeg scored his first of the preseason to give the Wings a two-goal, first intermission lead.

Both goals were scored on goalie Alexander Salak, who only faced seven shots. He made a couple of good saves close in as he and Ray Emery continue a training camp battle for the back-up position. Emery will play the second half of the game.

The Hawks had little in the way of offense, especially on their own power play. They have yet to score a goal with the man advantage this preseason.
