2nd-period wrap: Wings 3, Hawks 2

DETROIT -- The Chicago Blackhawks trail the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 after two periods in Sunday’s preseason contest at Joe Louis Arena.

The Hawks’ special teams, along with poor play in the faceoff zone, have let them down, although they did score a shorthanded goal in the second. Late in the period they added another score to get within one.

Brandon Pirri was killing a penalty when he blasted one past the glove of Ty Conklin as he entered the offensive zone, getting the Hawks on the board. But Detroit scored its second power-play goal of the game on a Nicklas Lidstrom shot as the Wings took advantage of a four-second two-man advantage. The Hawks lost the faceoff on the play and have won just 13 of 31 in the game.

Jimmy Hayes' first goal of the preseason came on a nice passing play from Ben Smith and helped keep the Hawks in the game.

Both teams had more chances in the second period. The Wings have 19 shots to the Hawks’ 16. Each team had seven after the first period.
