First period: Penguins 1, Blackhawks 0

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Blackhawks trail the Pittsburgh Penguins 1-0 after the first period in a preseason affair at the United Center.

The Hawks had two chances on the power play in the opening 20 minutes but were unable to cash in while the Penguins only took seconds to score on a man advantage of their own. On the play Jonathan Toews lost a faceoff in the defensive zone and the puck was quickly moved around to Steve Sullivan who scored from the left point.

Thanks to disciplined plays by both Dan Carcillo and Bryan Bickell, the Hawks got their two chances to score with the man advantage. Both skated away from the perpetrators who were harassing them. Despite some nifty passing on the power plays the Hawks were unable to tally.

Ray Emery, playing in his final game before a decision has to be made on his future, could have made the save on the shot by Sullivan but did have a couple of Penguins in the area as screens.
