Dave Bolland gave the Hawks the intermission lead as part of a highlight-reel shorthanded goal late in the period. Michael Frolik blocked a Kris Russell shot, tracked down the puck and found a streaking Bolland at center ice. Bolland scored as he was being hauled down.
The Hawks’ fourth line was involved in scoring plays both for and against. Marcus Kruger tallied his first career goal on a rebound of a Jamal Mayers shot. Kruger passed the puck to Mayers on a rush into the offensive zone and then went to the net for the rebound, netting an easy one after goalie Allen York couldn’t handle the shot from Mayers.
Both teams had chances on the power play but neither caused any damage. Bolland was called for two tripping infractions in the opening period and Jonathan Toews was called for hooking but the Hawks penalty killers were up to the task, eventually getting the shorthanded goal while keeping the Jackets power play off the board.
