First period wrap: Wings 2, Hawks 0

DETROIT -- The Chicago Blackhawks trail the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 after the first period at Joe Louis Arena.

The Hawks came out like the game was supposed to be played at night. They slept-walked through the early portion of the period getting outshot 10-0 at the first commercial timeout. Corey Crawford made big saves to keep it scoreless early.

Things only got worse as Marcus Kruger then took an offensive zone penalty putting the Wings on the power play and they promptly scored when Tomas Holmstrom redirected an Ian White shot for the goal.

A few minutes later Todd Bertuzzi got behind the Hawks defense on a line change and was off to the races on a breakaway when Pavel Datsyuk found him at center ice. He roofed one past Crawford for the goal.

The Hawks were dominated, outshot 21 to 4 in an awful period for the visitors.
