First-period wrap: Hawks 4, Rangers 0

NEW YORK -- The Chicago Blackhawks lead the New York Rangers 4-0 after the first period at Madison Square Garden.

The Hawks exploded for two breakaway goals, a penalty-shot score and a shot from the point by Nick Leddy that founds its way to the net.

Just over a minute into the game Dan Girardi covered the puck in the crease with his glove giving the Hawks a penalty shot which Jonathan Toews promptly scored on.

A minute and two seconds after that, Leddy found the back of the net after Marian Hossa held the puck around the goal before getting it to the Hawks defenseman. John Scott had a nice screen on the play.

Patrick Sharp and Hossa finished off the scoring with breakaway scores after Toews and Patrick Kane found them, respectively with outlet passes.

Key to the big period was Hawks’ penalty killing. They stopped three power-play attempts by the Rangers with no damage while New York had just five shots on net in the period. It’s the best the Hawks have looked in quite a while.
