Blackhawks send three to Rockford

The Chicago Blackhawks assigned forwards Jimmy Hayes and Brandon Pirri and defenseman Ryan Stanton to the AHL's Rockford IceHogs on Thursday.

All three players had been recalled by the Blackhwaks from Rockford earlier in the week and participated in training camp practices and in Wednesday's scrimmage. Hayes scored in Wednesday's scrimmage at the United Center.

The Blackhawks have 24 players on their active roster, including defenseman Steve Montador, who did not pass the team's physical and hasn't been participating in practices. Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said earlier in the week he would likely travel with 22 or 23 players for the team's season opener against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.

The current active roster includes 20-year-old forward Brandon Saad. Quenneville said Wednesday he was unsure if Saad would remain with the Blackhawks or return to Rockford. Saad, the Blackhawks' second-round pick in 2011, played in two regular-season games and two postseason games for the Blackhawks last season.

Saad was recalled by the Blackhawks along with Hayes, Pirri, Stanton, Brandon Bollig, Marcus Kruger, Andrew Shaw and Nick Leddy earlier in the week. Bollig, Kruger, Shaw and Leddy are also still on the Blackhawks' active roster.
