McCamey, Shurna Wooden Award finalists

Illinois senior point guard Demetri McCamey and Northwestern junior forward John Shurna were named among 50 candidates for the John R. Wooden Award on Monday.

McCamey averaged a team-leading 15.1 points and 7.1 assists last season. He flirted with the NBA in the offseason before returning to school for his final season.

Shurna is coming off a breakout season where he led the Wildcats with 18.2 points and 6.4 rebounds. Shurna played this summer with the United State Select Team in Las Vegas.

The Big Ten led all conferences with 10 players on the list. Purdue’s Robbie Hummel, JaJuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore, Michigan State’s Kalin Lucas and Durrell Summers, Ohio State’s William Buford, Penn State’s Talor Battle and Wisconsin’s Jon Leuer were also named.

McCamey, who played at St. Joseph High School, and Proviso East guard Jacob Pullen, who went to Proviso East High School, were the two Chicago-area players on the list.
