Major League Baseball scouting sources tell ESPNChicago.com that teams continue to call the Cubs about the availability of veterans – including first baseman Derrek Lee.
Lee, who turned to a trade to the Angels a week before the nonwaiver trading deadline, is suffering from a bulging disc in his lower back. He is out until at least Thursday. Lee received an epidural shot in his back on Monday to relieve the pain.
The Cubs’ first baseman hit four homers in three games over the weekend in St. Louis, prompting new interest from contending teams.
It’s unclear whether or not Lee would accept a trade if the Cubs’ asked him to waive his no-trade clause.
Teams have until Sept. 1 to trade for a player and still be able to add that acquisition to their playoff roster. The nonwaiver trading deadline ended on July 31. Now teams must acquire a player through waivers.
