Five Bengals questionable for Thursday

MIAMI -- As we've mentioned all week, the Cincinnati Bengals are in fact heading into their game Thursday night against the Miami Dolphins banged and bruised. Their official pregame injury report, released Wednesday afternoon, reflected as such.

Middle linebacker Rey Maualuga, who hobbled past reporters on crutches Tuesday, was formally listed as out for the ballgame. Coach Marvin Lewis sidestepped questions all week about Maualuga's status, saying that he, like other players not already listed as out, had a chance to play this week. Those comments came despite an ESPN report earlier this week in which NFL Insider Adam Schefter was told by a source that Maualuga was out three to four weeks.

Along with Maualuga, three others -- two of which were just added to the injured reserve in the last day -- were given an out designation. Five other Bengals were tabbed as questionable.

Among those who still do have a chance to go are offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth, running back Rex Burkhead, receiver Mohamed Sanu, linebacker Michael Boley and defensive end Wallace Gilberry. Like Maualuga, all of those players but Burkhead were injured in Sunday's 49-9 win over the Jets. Maualuga suffered a concussion and a knee injury on one second-quarter play and didn't return. Sanu experienced a shoulder injury and Whitworth hurt a knee in that same second quarter. Boley and Gilberry went into this week's practices with respective hamstring and groin injuries.

Gilberry, Sanu and Burkhead, a backup running back who likely will be among Thursday's inactives, were limited in Wednesday's early walkthrough. Boley and Whitworth did not participate.

In addition to Maualuga, the Bengals earlier this week declared defensive back Taylor Mays Out for the game. On Wednesday, they officially placed him on IR, where he joined cornerback Leon Hall and defensive end Robert Geathers. The player Mays was mostly playing in relief of, linebacker Emmanuel Lamur, was among those placed on IR after a preseason injury.
