Johnny Manziel Camp Daily: Aug. 5

A day-by-day and honest look at Johnny Manziel's first training camp with the Cleveland Browns:

THE WORK: Manziel and Brian Hoyer mixed reps with the starters, indicating that the competition remains in progress. As the day progressed, Hoyer got more reps with the ones, indicating that he will start Saturday in Detroit. Both quarterbacks had good days, as Manziel continues to take steps that indicate he’s starting to gain a better grasp of the offense and what’s expected. He continues to make mistakes, but he also was a little quicker in his reads and stronger in his throws. At one point he completed four in a row – all over the field. But as much as Manziel made some good throws, Hoyer made more.

GOOD THROW: The highlight of the day was a deep throw that Manziel launched that fell right into Travis Benjamin’s hands at the goal line. It wasn’t a thing of beauty, but it hit Benjamin perfectly in the hands. And Benjamin dropped it.

BAD THROW: Manziel seemed rattled on one play, as after his first read wasn’t there he looked and threw quickly to Anthony Armstrong on a deep out. The ball was wildly overthrown, though, and had no chance of being completed. On another throw, Manziel scrambled and launched a deep pass that was caught to the cheers of the crowd. Full speed, though, Manziel would have never thrown the ball. He’d have been sacked by one of the defensive lineman who pulled away from him.

THE WORD: “He must have gone to the Braylon Edwards school of pass catching.” – one fan to another after Benjamin dropped the would-be touchdown, proving that fans have a) a memory and b) a sense of humor.

START CHART: On a 1 to 10 scale, with 10 being Manziel certainly starts the opener, we'll take a look at his chances as he goes through camp.
