As we wait for the white smoke to emerge from Matthew Knight Arena in Oregon, something amazing has happened.
Gonzaga coach Mark Few actually answered questions about a current job opening, and yes, he did talk to Oregon about the coaching position at his alma mater.
But in the interview yesterday with 1510 KGA, Few indicates that all things being equal, he'll stay in Spokane for a long, long time.
"I’ve had a great relationship with Phil Knight, and Pat Kilnenny’s one of my closest friends, and those are the guys that are handling that. So I mean, obviously we talked. We talked last year, we talked this year. Again, those are people that mean a lot to me, so I wanted to make sure that we at least talked.
"At the end of the day, I love what we have going here. I think the way myself and my family have been treated here, the way our program’s treated here, I think it doesn’t get any better than that. I’ve always said from Day 1 since these job opportunities have been coming our way, as long as we still feel like that there’s room for growth and the school and the people and everybody around the program will help us keep growing the product and we still feel appreciated around here, then I don’t see any reason to ever leave.
"But you don’t close the door on anything. At this point, we’ve got a great ride here. Our quality of life is so good that I don’t see anything changing that. But you just never know."
