There is plenty of anecdotal evidence that John Wooden was not your average guy, but Washington's Lorenzo Romar has one more story about the legendary coach that's pretty priceless.
Romar told KJR about the time that as a head coach at Pepperdine, he got the opportunity to take his assistant coaches to Wooden's nearby condo for a visit.
"When we were done, he calls me up and says, ‘Hey, one of your assistants -- I remember where he was sitting -- he left some change in the couch. And I said, 'Oh yeah, that’s fine, Coach. That’s fine. I’ll get it later.'
Later that summer, he spoke at my basketball camp, and I went to pick him up. And when he comes out to the car, he has 85 cents. He had it in his hand. He said, 'Here’s that money,' and that was four months later."
Hey, 85 cents was big money back when Wooden was growing up. In any case, it's good to know that even when it came down to some not-so-serious coinage, Wooden was honest about it.
