Pacific beat Arkansas State 77-70 yesterday in an NIT Season Tip-Off consolation game at JQH Arena in Springfield, Mo., doing so after both teams had to clear the court in the first half due to a tornado warning.
According to the Springfield News-Leader, that was a new experience for longtime Pacific coach Bob Thomason and most of his players.
Pacific was leading 24-16 with 7:27 left in the first half when tornado-warning sirens sounded. The teams were sent to their locker rooms and the game was delayed for 15 minutes until the warning expired.
"I thought we were in a pretty safe environment and could keep playing," Thomason said. "Of course, that is a pretty good-sized scoreboard hanging up there."
Demetrece Young, the Pacific player who had experienced tornado warnings before, is an Oklahoma City native who ended up lead the Tigers with 19 points.
Pacific has wins over UTEP and Nevada as well and continues play in the tournament later today against Missouri State.
