Ranking the conferences: From 1 to 32

Here are this week’s ESPN Stats & Information college basketball conference rankings (results through Sunday's games)

  • The Big Ten continues to top the standings thanks to its incredible balance. Only three of its 11 schools (27.3 percent) are outside the top 50 in average computer ratings. The Big East (43.8 percent of its schools outside the top 50), Big 12 (50.0) and ACC (66.7) have far more non-elite schools.

  • The Big East, despite its five schools in the AP top 10, has too many below-average teams weighing down its average. DePaul, South Florida, Rutgers, Marquette, Seton Hall and St. Johns are all outside the top 80 in average computer ratings. DePaul (240.5) has the worst computer average of any school in a top-3 conference.

  • Conference USA is within a few UCF votes in the polls of overtaking the Atlantic 10 for the eighth spot. The Knights are inexplicably not in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top 25 and only 24th in the AP poll despite a 10-0 record with neutral site wins against Florida and Miami. Sagarin’s ELO rating has UCF as the eighth-ranked school in the country.
