Griffin Lentsch of Division III Grinnell College (Iowa) scored 89 points on Saturday, in the Pioneers' 145-97 win at Principia College. Lentsch's total is the third-most in NCAA men's basketball history and the most ever in a Division III game. He finished 27 of 55 from the field, including 15 of 33 on threes, and made 20 of 22 free throws.
Most Points In Single Game
NCAA Men’s Basketball History
The record across all divisions is 113 set by Clarence "Bevo" Francis of Rio Grande College of Ohio in 1954, while the Division I record is 100 by Furman’s Frank Selvy. Both performances occurred within two weeks of each other in February 1954. Lentsch’s total is the most in a game in more than 57 years. The previous Division III record was 77 points by Grinnell’s Jeff Clement in February 1998.
Shabazz Gets a Triple Double
Connecticut's Shabazz Napier set career highs with 12 rebounds and 13 assists, along with a season-high 22 points, as the Huskies topped Coppin State 87-70. It was the second triple-double in Division I this season (along with Duquense’s T.J. McConnell).
Napier had never previously recorded double-digit rebounds or assists in a game. The 13 assists are the most by a UConn player since Marcus Williams dished out 13 against Notre Dame in 2006. Napier posted the ninth triple-double in UConn history and first since Kemba Walker last season.
Cunningham’s Prolific Free Throw Day
Three days after scoring a career-high 35 points against Hofstra, Oregon State’s Jared Cunningham poured in 37 on Saturday. The Beavers topped Texas 100-95 in overtime, their first win against the Longhorns since 1967. Cunningham shot 20-23 from the free throw line, tying a school record held by A.C. Green and Mel Counts. He fell three free throws shy of the Pac-12 record set by Washington State’s Bryan Rison in 1980.
Cunningham is the first Oregon State player with back-to-back 30-point games since Corey Benjamin in 1998. He’s the first Beaver to score 37 in a game since Gary Payton set the school record with 58 points against LSU in February 1990. Oregon State takes on Vanderbilt on Monday night looking for its first 5-0 start in 25 years.
Machado’s Assist Frenzy
In the span of three games in four days, Iona’s Scott Machado doled out 41 assists, including his second straight 15-assist game in Sunday's 89-63 win against Maryland. He’s the first player with back-to-back games with 15 or more assists since TCU’s Prince Fowler in December 1998. Doug Gottlieb fell one assist shy of pulling it off later that season.
It’s only November, and Machado is already the first Division I player with multiple 15-assist games in a season since Oakland’s Johnathan Jones in 2008-09. The 26-point win was Iona’s largest ever against a team from one of the power six conferences.
Jaguars Way Off the Mark
South Alabama was 0-24 from 3-point range in Sunday’s 80-39 loss to Florida State. That tied the Division I record for most misses without a 3-point make in a game, which happened twice before. In March 2004, South Carolina State went 0-24 from long distance in a loss to Florida A&M. Dayton then tied that record on November 28 in an overtime win against Auburn.
