Because Saint Louis’ season hasn’t been extraordinary enough, the Billikens got to watch the Selection Show from a Secaucus, N.J., Best Buy.
No, that’s not a joke.
Hours after winning the Atlantic 10 tournament in Brooklyn, Saint Louis headed for its charter flight at Teterboro airport in New Jersey.
“The plan was to watch the Selection Show in the terminal,’’ said Saint Louis sports information director Brian Kunderman.
But Manhattan traffic conspired against the Billikens, and with the clock ticking toward the 6 o’clock magic hour of the Selection Show, the team was worried it would miss the whole thing.
“So someone saw a Best Buy and we pulled in,’’ Kunderman said.
Dressed in their sweats and championship A-10 gear, the Billikens turned more than a few heads when they walked in en masse and stood in front of the nearest big-screen television.
But when the employees -- and the shoppers -- realized who they were and why they were there, they watched along with the team.
And when Saint Louis was announced as a No. 4 seed in the Midwest Region, the news was greeted with a nice cheer.
“It was awesome,’’ Kunderman said. “And thank God we stopped because we were announced pretty quickly.’’
Secaucus GM Jen Hart welcomed the unexpected party.
"I brought them in the Magnolia room and the next thing I know there 30 guys there," she said in a statement through Best Buy PR representative Jeff Shelman. "A couple of minutes later, they all started screaming. They thanked us 100 times, helped move the chairs back and got on the bus. Customers were asking what was going on. It was really cool. They were really nice guys."
