Utah to honor player's stepfather

The NCAA will allow Utah players to wear No. 24 patches on their jerseys in honor of John Smith, the late stepfather of forward Jay Watkins, reports Lya Wodraska of the Salt Lake Tribune.

Smith, a former Harlem Globetrotter, passed away earlier this month during a Utah road trip, causing Watkins to rush home to grieve with his family and miss the LSU game.

Watkins is attending the third school of his college career and appears to have found a second family with the Utes.

"Everything has fallen into place," he told the Tribune. "Even with the injuries and my stepdad's passing. I've been surrounded by so much support and love here and felt taken care of."
