Numbers to Know: Wednesday recap

Player of the Night - Terone Johnson, Purdue Boilermakers

It was the biggest performance in the biggest win of the night. Johnson scored a career-high 25 points, as Purdue knocked off No. 11 Illinois 68-61. It’s the first time he’s even topped 20 points this season. The Boilermakers have now won eight straight against the Illini.

Scorer of the Night - Troy Daniels, Virginia Commonwealth Rams

Daniels scored 33 points while not attempting a 2-pointer or a free throw. He went 11-for-20 from 3-point range to finish with 33 points, as VCU easily handled ETSU 109-58. Daniels set an A-10 record and a school record for made 3-pointers in a game.

Daniels also added 10 rebounds, becoming the first player since Detroit’s Desmond Ferguson in 2000 with double-digit 3s and rebounds in a game.

Freshman of the Night - Ryan Arcidiacono, Villanova Wildcats

Arcidiacono scored a career-high 32 points, as Villanova pulled out a 98-86 overtime win over St. John’s. That’s the most points scored by a major-conference freshman this season. It’s also the most by a Villanova freshman since Scottie Reynolds dropped 40 on Connecticut in 2007.

Stat Sheet Stuffer - Tymell Murphy, Florida International Golden Panthers

Murphy went off for 24 points and 20 rebounds (both career highs), as FIU beat Florida A&M 88-72. Murphy and Towson’s Jerrelle Benimon are the only players with a 20-20 game this season. He also joins Tony Mitchell as the only Sun Belt players with a 20-20 game in the past five seasons.

Bench Player of the Night – Ethan Wragge, Creighton Bluejays

On an uncharacteristically quiet night for Doug McDermott (15 points), Wragge led Creighton to a 79-72 win over Illinois State. He went 6-for-9 from 3-point range to finish with a season-high 18 points.

Wragge is the ultimate 3-point specialist. He’s only hit two 2-point field goals all season. For his career, 91 percent of his field goals have been from behind the arc.
