Vitals: Linebacker Jordan Mastrogiovanni | 6-foot-2, 225 pounds

Committed: June 14, 2012

ESPN.com grade: 83. Four-star prospect.

ESPN.com rankings: No. 206 in ESPN300, No. 7 inside linebacker, No. 31 in Midlands, No. 26 in Texas

Picked OU over: LSU, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Clemson, Baylor, Ole Miss, Boise State and others.

State of the position: The Sooners have two returning starters in Corey Nelson and Tom Wort along with two quality young players in Aaron Franklin and Frank Shannon at the position. so it could be considered a position of strength. There’s no major need for immediate help.

Pros: “Mastrogiovanni is a dominant run stopper with very good zone coverage skills and he has the size and athleticism for the inside linebacker position at the major level of competition. He is an explosive, tough customer who is a punishing, knock 'em back tackler. Mastrogiovanni has the athleticism and toughness needed to see early situational playing time, if not start at the BCS level of competition.” - ESPN scouting report

Cons: “It appears his frame is capable of supporting additional bulk over time.” - ESPN scouting report

Similar to/potential role: Shannon. Mastrogiovanni has the athleticism, size and range to play a role similiar to Shannon. He has the toughness to play the run well without being a major concern in pass coverage. He also could play a role as a pass rusher.

Expected impact: 2013. While OU doesn’t need Mastrogiovanni to play immediately, he could force his way into the field with strong play on special teams as a freshman. It would be ideal to redshirt him but he brings unique versatility that could earn him a role in OU’s defense as well as on special teams during his first semester on campus.
