Cowboys take risk at today's practice

IRVING, Texas -- By 3 p.m. today the Cowboys have to make 12 roster moves to reach the 75-man limit. Some teams have already made their cuts. The Cowboys are practicing all of their healthy players, which could be a risk.

If a player who was going to be cut by today’s deadline gets hurt in practice, then the Cowboys could have to cut a player they weren’t ready to cut or come up with an injury settlement that chews up some salary-cap space.

Coach Jason Garrett spent parts of 12 seasons in the NFL and had to sweat out cut-down days early and late in his career. He understands what these days are like for the players and for the coaches.

“It’s always very challenging to cut down your team, to make those kinds of decisions with guys who have given you so much since the start of the offseason, since the start of training camp or maybe a few years,” Garrett said. “These are people’s lives, not just numbers on a white board. We are always very appreciative of what guys do; the commitment they made to us. But this is part of what we do. Every decision we make will be in the best interest of the Cowboys.”
