After two games the Cowboys are 1-1. We review what happened in the 17-16 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs with our weekly Three Up and Three Down segment.
DeMarcus Ware. He picked up his first two sacks of the season and was a strong force in the run and pass games. The Cowboys flipped Ware from right to left defensive end and it seemed to create mismatches for the Chiefs' offensive line.
Dez Bryant. Forget about the dropped pass for a moment. Bryant finished with nine catches for 141 yards and one touchdown, a leaping grab in the back of the end zone against tight man coverage. Bryant had 100 receiving yards after one quarter, more than the entire Chiefs team. Bryant continues his strong start to the season.
Jason Hatcher. The defensive tackle finished with six tackles, a sack and two tackles for losses. Hatcher doesn't get the attention that defensive end DeMarcus Ware gets, but his start to the season has been strong. Hatcher is drawing double-teams along the front and is still able to become a disruptive force.
Running game. DeMarco Murray said the Cowboys need to run it more, Tony Romo said they need to run better. Whatever the issues are, the Cowboys are struggling to establish it. As a unit, the Cowboys rushed for just 37 yards on 16 carries on Sunday. Murray had 25 yards on 12 carries and there were zero fourth-quarter runs.
Tony Romo. He lost his accuracy in the fourth quarter. Maybe his ribs were bothering him, but the starting quarterback said they weren't, but Romo was 8-of-15 with a pick, sack and fumble. Romo had a bad stretch with three consecutive incompletions on the third possession of the fourth quarter leading to Dan Bailey's 53-yard field goal.
Bill Callahan. We've told you about the running attack but his play call of a screen to end the game is puzzling. Overall, Callahan is calling for plays to get Bryant involved in the offense with some deep throws, but what about Miles Austin and Jason Witten? The Cowboys waited to long to get Lance Dunbar going -- he got 12 yards on his first carry, but fumbled after a pass completion. The offensive line was OK, but needed more of a balanced offense.
