Pondering the 46: Cole Beasley active?

IRVING, Texas -- In a perfect world the Dallas Cowboys would have the same inactive players every week, but nothing is ever perfect in the NFL.

As we ponder the 46-man roster Sunday against the St. Louis Rams, let’s start with Dez Bryant. There is no doubt he will play, but how effective can he be with limited practice time because of the back spasms?

Cole Beasley has been inactive the first two games, so to cover themselves with another wide receiver he could be in uniform in Sunday. If the Cowboys believe Bryant will be ready for full duty, then tight end Andre Smith could be active with the idea that his blocking will help the running game.

To get Beasley or Smith on the active roster the Cowboys will have to dress fewer offensive linemen, which means Phil Costa could be inactive and Mackenzy Bernadeau would serve as the backup center. Costa has worked some as a short-yardage fullback, but there might be more value in having another player active over him.

With Ernie Sims missing his second straight game because of a groin injury, the Cowboys can continue to use their nine defensive backs, but what do they do with the defensive line this week? Is Caesar Rayford active this week for the first time or do they go with David Carter, who was signed on Tuesday?

Here’s a guess at the inactives: Joseph Randle, David Arkin, Costa, Darrion Weems, Ernie Sims, Beasley and Carter.
