Jason Garrett sends congrats Farrell's way

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett has ties to the New York Yankees, but he was not above feeling happy for Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell, a friend from many years ago while growing up in Monmouth Beach, N.J., for winning the World Series.

Farrell and Garrett played youth baseball against each other.

“He was a legend,” Garrett said. “He was a little older than I was, but he was just way better than everybody else by a long shot. And he played for the Tidal Waves in the Cap League, and in the Mayor’s Trophy game we intentionally walked him four times. He was just better than everybody. A fantastic guy from a great family, and I’m really happy for him.”

So Farrell, who had a 10-year Major League Baseball career as a pitcher, was David Ortiz before David Ortiz?

"He was incredible," Garrett said. "He probably hit .733, too."
