Big 12 fantasy football: Season review

The race ending up being a close one, but it’s officially time to crown Jake Trotter as the champion of the 2013 Big 12 fantasy football league.

Trotter took home the inaugural title (no money, just pride) thanks to the fact he owned the No. 1 and No. 2 scorers in the league, Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty and West Virginia running back Charles Sims. He also had Texas Tech’s Jace Amaro, who finished second among all receivers in fantasy points despite playing tight end.

After 15 weeks, Trotter finished with 1,624 total points and was the leading scorer in seven weeks of the season. Yours truly finished second at 1,591 points, and Brandon Chatmon came in third place at 1,403.

A few takeaways from what we learned:

  • The gap between Petty and the second-best quarterback in the Big 12 was huge. He finished with 351 points. Only one other Big 12 quarterback surpassed 200, and that was Kansas State’s Jake Waters. Petty scored more points in 12 weeks than Peyton Manning has in 14.

  • For comparison’s sake: Petty finished with fewer points than Jordan Lynch (477), Johnny Manziel (384) and Derek Carr (378) in the regular season but did put up more than Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston (306).

  • Lache Seastunk was on pace for more than 250 fantasy points before he went down with an injury against Oklahoma. Sims’ big season was aided by 54 points scored on receiving yards and receiving scores.

  • Only one Big 12 defense put up positive fantasy points in very game this season: Oklahoma State. Big 12 defenses finished with a total of 27 games with negative fantasy scoring this season.

We busted out the calculator and added up the season totals. Here were the top scorers in the Big 12 in 2013.
