DALLAS -- Dallas Baptist University could be placed in its first Division I conference as soon as the end of next year.
DBU’s baseball program will have a provisional year with the Missouri Valley Conference next season, meaning the Patriots will have a full MVC schedule but will not be listed in the standings or play in the conference tournament.
"That’d be a huge step for us," coach Dan Heefner said. “I think it’s a mutually beneficial thing. I think it would help our program out. I think it would help the Missouri Valley out as well. Definitely something we’re really excited about and hope happens. Hopefully this run that we’re making right now increases our chances of getting in.”
The MVC will vote in May 2012 whether it should accept DBU into the conference.
“I think the Missouri Valley makes a lot of sense not only for DBU but for the Missouri Valley schools,” athletic director Ryan Erwin said. “I think they want a presence in Texas and Dallas-Fort Worth is a baseball hotbed and they don’t have that right now.”
As an Independent, the only way DBU can make it to an NCAA regional is by an at-large bid. The Patriots were one of nine teams listed as a D-1 Independent baseball team this season.
