Tech defensive coordinator leaves program

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech defensive coordinator James Willis has left the program and will not coach in the Red Raiders' Ticket City Bowl matchup against Northwestern in Dallas.

"I wish James the best of luck but it is important for the football team to keep pressing forward," head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "We have a great defensive staff here that will carry the load along with my assistance as we prepare for Northwestern."

Willis was in his first season at Texas Tech and his first as a defensive coordinator. He joined the staff after spending the 2009 season at Alabama and the previous three under Tuberville at Auburn.

The first Ticket City Bowl takes place at 11 a.m. New Year's Day at the Cotton Bowl.
