Texas guard Varez Ward and forward Shawn Williams each have been granted a medical hardship waiver from the Big 12 for the 2009-10 season, the school announced Thursday. Ward will be a redshirt sophomore for the upcoming 2010-11 season, while Williams will be a redshirt freshman.
Ward ruptured his right quadriceps tendon during pre-game warm-ups prior to the O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic championship game against Pittsburgh (Nov. 24) in Kansas City. He underwent successful surgery on Dec. 1 and missed the remainder of the season. Ward started each of UT’s first three games and averaged 6.7 points and 3.0 rebounds in 23.0 minutes per contest.
Williams suffered a left ankle injury against Texas State (Dec. 12). He underwent successful surgery on Jan. 20 and missed the remainder of the season. Williams saw action in seven of UT’s first eight games, averaging 1.6 points and 1.7 rebounds in 5.6 minutes per contest.
