Cowboys cut safety Mike Hamlin

The Cowboys released safety Michael Hamlin, a fifth-round draft pick in 2009.

Hamlin played eight games over the last two seasons with the Cowboys, recording only one tackle.

The Cowboys hoped Hamlin would challenge Alan Ball for a starting job at free safety this summer, but that never happened. Hamlin had been surpassed on the depth chart by rookies Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, Barry Church and Danny McCray and was inactive the last two games.

One possibility for the open roster spot is safety Quentin Demps, a 2008 fourth-round pick by the Eagles who worked out at Valley Ranch last week.
