IRVING, Texas -- Two defensive starters sat out the first practice of the Jason Garrett era, which featured the Cowboys wearing full pads for the first time since training camp.
That doesn't include defensive end Marcus Spears, whose season is over after being placed on injured reserve with a severe left calf strain.
Outside linebacker Anthony Spencer and inside linebacker Bradie James didn't dress out Wednesday. Spencer suffered a stinger during Sunday's loss to the Packers. James has been dealing with a sprained PCL in his knee for weeks.
Defensive end Jason Hatcher, Spears' backup, also didn't practice. He's likely to miss a couple of more games with a strained groin. Stephen Bowen is expected to replace Spears in the starting lineup.
Reserve offensive guard Montrae Holland did dress out for practice after missing the previous two games with a strained groin.
