Matthew Stafford wants to return

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford circled Sunday's game on his calendar because the Highland Park native would have a chance to return home and play against the Dallas Cowboys.

Stafford won't play, however, because of a separated right shoulder.

Stafford told the Detroit Free-Press he hopes to return this season, at some point. Stafford got some good news regarding his injury from doctors and team officials: He won't need surgery, and that means the team won't place him on injured reserve.

So it gives Stafford a chance to come back in late December.

Shaun Hill starts for the Lions on Sunday. By the way, he has a broken left forearm.
