McNabb's benching surprises Cowboys

IRVING, Texas -- Washington’s decision to bench Donovan McNabb came as a surprise to the Cowboys.

“I didn’t even know that,” safety Alan Ball said. “Thanks for the news.”

Mike Shanahan has elected to go with Rex Grossman as the Redskins’ starter Sunday at Cowboys Stadium and McNabb will be the No. 3 quarterback behind John Beck.

Several defenders said they weren’t too familiar with Grossman’s game. McNabb is more of the running threat between the two; Grossman is more likely to stay in the pocket.

“People do things for a reason,” linebacker DeMarcus Ware said. “Grossman could be in there for one play and McNabb could be right back out there, so we’ve got to be ready to play our game.”

Ware sacked Grossman twice when the Cowboys beat Chicago in 2007.
