Tony Romo's bid to make the U.S. Open is on hold for another year.
Romo shot a 9-over 81 at the local qualifier at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney on Monday. He had needed to finish in the top 10 to move on to sectional qualifying at Dallas Athletic Club next month. The U.S. Open is June 16-19 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.
How'd it happen? A triple bogey on No. 15 after a lost tee shot out of bounds didn't help.
He was 4 over on the front nine under windy conditions. He opened with back-to-back bogeys and bogeyed No. 5 before making his first birdie on the par-5 seventh hole.
He made a doubley bogey on the par-3 eighth hole when his tee shot flew the green into foot high rough.
